Watch vs. Warning vs. Advisory: what winter alerts mean

Video US #3 · sourcedtrends US · Nov 1, 2026

The first winter alerts of the season went up in late October 2026, from Alaska's Brooks Range to the Cascades, the Sierra Nevada and Colorado's mountains. The National Weather Service uses three tiers: a watch means a hazardous winter storm is possible, but its timing and location are still uncertain – time to prepare. A warning means it is happening or about to and threatens life or property – stay off the roads if you can. An advisory is a step lower: conditions are a significant inconvenience that can turn dangerous without caution, so slow down. The criteria differ by region – a warning in the Southeast takes far less snow than one in the Northern Plains – and new this winter, the NWS can add "Particularly Dangerous Situation" wording to warnings for extreme blizzards and ice storms.
