60,000 runners, 5 bridges: the NYC Marathon turns 50
On Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, about 60,000 runners are expected at the New York City Marathon, a 26.2-mile course that crosses five bridges. The race started in 1970 as laps around Central Park; in 1976 it ran through all five boroughs for the first time, with about 2,000 starters. In 2025 a record of more than 59,000 runners finished. The route starts on Staten Island, crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and runs through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan; this year it changes for the first time in 15 years, with a small adjustment in the Bronx. About two million spectators are expected – and daylight saving time ends the night before, at 2 a.m.
