Why Halloween candy got so expensive

Video #1 · sourcedtrends US · Oct 30, 2026

Candy prices in the US are up 7.7% in a year – faster than food prices overall. Even so, the National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend a record $13.5 billion on Halloween in 2026, $4.1 billion of it on candy. The main driver is a lag in chocolate prices: extreme weather hit cocoa harvests in West Africa, and although cocoa has since become cheaper, the chocolate on shelves now was made with cocoa bought at 2025's high prices, so shelf prices fall much more slowly. A label tip: under federal rules, milk chocolate must contain at least 10% chocolate liquor; products labeled "chocolate candy" don't meet that standard.
